SELLING YOURSELF - ACTIVITIES

1

Prepare a CV for yourself. Experiment with different ways of presenting the information. Remember that employers see hundreds of similar CVs, so one that stands out will get you noticed.

2

Find a job advert in the local or national newspaper. Write a letter applying for that job.

3

Once you’ve applied for a job, you may have to go for an interview. Making a good impression is vital. In pairs, role-play two scenarios in which one candidate makes a bad impression, and one makes a good impression on an interviewer. Think about dressing for the interview, timekeeping and attitude towards the interviewer and the job. (These role-plays could be extended into entertaining mini-dramas to be performed in front of the class.)

Remember that it’s important to make the most of yourself so that you can feel that you have done your best.

4

Practise interview questions with a partner. Create situations and characters to cover different types of questioning and styles of interview.

Remember that as an interviewer, it is important to ask ‘open’ questions, which require the interviewee to give a detailed answer, rather than ‘closed’ questions, which can be simply answered with a yes or no.

For example: open question: ‘Tell me about the subjects you chose to study?’, closed question: ‘Do you consider yourself good at sport?’
