Science Teachers
This resource is designed to show real-life applications of Science and showcase the variety of scientific careers available within the cosmetic, toiletry and perfumery industry. Students often query the application of their learning and this website has been produced to put that learning in context and may prove useful in terms of introducing work-related learning. It is levelled to be accessible to all Key Stage 4 students and some sections of the resource are also suitable for Key Stage 3 students.
Using the Resource
This resource is designed to be used in small sections, as teachers work through the curriculum. Each of the science sections covers one aspect of the GCSE course and the details of its coverage and relevance are given below. This resource can therefore be revisited at appropriate times in the course curriculum year and used as a revision and plenary tool to recap the topic at the end of a teaching session. Within each section there are illustrations and animations to bring the subject to life and interactive activities such as drag and drop quizzes. These make good activities for use on an interactive whiteboard in front of the whole class. There are also worksheets available for students to use if they work through the website sections individually. These worksheets have been written and are downloadable in Word format for you to edit and differentiate them to suit your class.
Alternatively, this website can be used as a revision resource before GCSE exams.
Each of the sections touches on a different aspect of Science.
The National Curriculum relevance of each of the sections is shown below. There are 6 downloadable worksheets to accompany the 6 science sections of the site.

Careers Teachers
The Cosmetic, Toiletry and Perfumery Association (CTPA) has sponsored this free resource to help you lead your pupils to an appreciation of how science is used in the cosmetics and personal care industry. The website interviews people who work in different parts of the industry including bio-chemists, a toxicologist, a perfumer, a microbiologist, product formulators, cosmetic scientists and even a celebrity make-up artist. The people who have been interviewed talk honestly about their careers and what they love and hate about their jobs. The interviews are designed to give an insight into how varied the careers options are in this industry and how very different science backgrounds can be applied in the workplace. Interestingly, all of the people interviewed endorsed the importance of other subjects such as English, maths, languages and communication skills in developing their careers.
In the ‘Meet the Faces’ section there is a central reference point providing careers advice and links for students who are interested in finding out more. There are also sections presenting information about different science topics that are relevant to the cosmetics and personal care industry. You can download a worksheet to guide your students through the resource from here.
Faces of Science has been designed by teachers and educational specialists to be as straightforward to use as possible, so please let us know how we’re doing and provide us with feedback on what you think of the resource and how you find using it in the classroom. Through your feedback, we aim continually to improve the resource.
PSHE Teachers
The PSHE section of this resource is designed to stimulate discussion about self-esteem - what it is, how it is determined, what can affect our self-esteem and how we can raise our self-esteem. It is recommended that you begin the session by asking students to work through the worksheet and then use the website to extend the session and learn more about how to raise their self-esteem. Alternatively you could work through the questions on the website on an interactive whiteboard.
There is a downloadable worksheet to accompany this section of the site and to prompt student discussion before using the site. Download the self esteem worksheet from here (PDF)
Website Feedback
We hope you and your students enjoy using the resource and we would encourage you to give us feedback. A feedback form has been provided below for download, so that we can continue to produce the kind of free resources you want to use.
