Scientists use their knowledge of light reflection and chemical colours to create cosmetic products that can enhance a person’s image. Examples with light reflection include hair products that can make hair look shiny by filling gaps in the hair’s cuticle to create a smooth finish on the hair shaft, and lip products that can make lips look shiny by filling the crevices in the lips, and using a consistency of lipstick or lipgloss that adheres together to make a smooth surface.
Different chemical pigments or dyes can be used to absorb some colours in white light but reflect other colours. By using different chemicals, scientists can make a vast array of different coloured cosmetic products to change the outward colour appearance of skin, nails and hair such as tinted foundations, nail polish, hair colour etc. Extra ingredients can also be added to make-up for special effects e.g. small particles of crystal/glitter can be added to create a light-diffusing glow or frosted effect.
Look at the pictures of lips and see if you can guess what effect the designer of the lipstick wanted and what colours of light they wanted to absorb and reflect.
Make-up and hair colorants are used by lots of people to make themselves feel more confident and assured of their appearance.
