Playing with Light and Colour

The way in which light is reflected varies to create the array of colours and textures we see around us. Smooth surfaces reflect light in a regular way i.e. the angle of incidence (the angle at which the light hits the surface) is equal to the angle of reflection.

Rough surfaces create a diffuse reflection where the light hitting the surface is reflected at lots of different angles (note the angle of incidence is still equal to the angle of reflection but due to the nature of the surface the reflected light is scattered).
