Diagram of a tooth
The crown of the tooth is the part that is visible above the gum. The root is the part of the tooth below the gum. The enamel is the top outer surface of the tooth. The dentine is inside the enamel. At the centre of the tooth is the pulp cavity, which contains nerves and blood vessels. The cementum is the hard covering on the root of the tooth .The periodontal ligament connects the cementum to the gum and jaw bone and holds to tooth in place whilst allowing for flexibility and acting as a shock absorber.
