Spots can form for a number of reasons but most form when an oily substance, sebum (the oily substance that makes your skin waterproof), gets trapped in a hair follicle within the skin. Bacteria then multiply within the sealed follicle making it inflamed and red. Once spots have formed, it is advisable to wash the area with an antibacterial cleansing product to keep the area clean. Try not to squeeze the spot as this can lead to infection and scarring.
The best way to prevent spots is to wash morning and evening to remove dirt and bacteria. People are more likely to get spots at certain times in their lives, such as when their body is going through big hormonal changes. Teenagers can get lots of spots because their body is getting used to higher levels of hormones. If washing twice a day does not reduce the number of spots within a few months, try drinking more water and look at your diet to make sure it contains enough vitamins and minerals. Doctors can sometimes help treat persistent spot problems with medication.
