Foundation

What does foundation do?

The aim of foundation is to cover up and blend-in skin imperfections, to give an even colour and texture on the face.

Skin imperfections can vary widely ranging from small freckles to high skin pigmentation, such as red cheeks or birthmarks. Foundation is designed to even out the smaller imperfections such as rosy cheeks or blotchy skin tone caused by uneven skin pigmentation. Specialist thicker foundations are used to cover larger skin imperfections, such as a vascular birthmark (often referred to as a strawberry mark or port-wine stain).

Why are there so many different types of foundation?

There are different textures of foundation ranging from liquids and mousses to creams and solids. There are also various formulations using a range of ingredients designed to do different things. Some formulations promise 'long-lasting cover', ‘a radiant healthy sheen’ or a 'matt satin finish to your skin'. All these 'effects' are visible factors and are obtained by adding different ingredients.

What does SPF mean?

With increased scientific knowledge, the addition of a sun protection factor (SPF) is now seen as beneficial to most skin care products that stay on the face all day. Although an SPF may be present in foundations, the main aim of the foundation is not to protect against the sun, but to even out the skin tone and to enhance the skin's texture. Sun protection products should be used as part of a responsible approach to sun care. Nowadays, many foundations contain skin conditioners and vitamins to nourish the skin as they are worn.
