Design Briefs

As you have seen, in order to produce a product for retail sale you have a number of decisions to make before you are ready to manufacture your line. The first of these is the design brief for the packaging. Although you have to consider the right material to contain your product (glass, plastic etc.), there are 4 basic factors to the overall ‘look’ of the packaging:

Type face

Name

Colour(s)

Graphic

You are going to design the packaging for a product. Read through the following guidelines and then download this Packaging Outlines pdf. This file contains a variety of different product shapes with which to apply your unique design brief.

Type face: here are just four examples of different type faces available to designers. You could choose one of these or choose your own from the variety available on your computer.

Haettenshweiler - Woody - Gigi - Contour

Name: here we have four examples of names. Look at these names, what are they saying to you? Choose a name to describe your product.

Face Fresh - Spot Free - On The Spot - Cleanse

Colour(s): all product packaging has a distinctive colour that enables the consumer to recognise them easily. Manufacturers and designers may choose colours that attract the eye, but whatever is chosen, it has to be a suitable colour for the ‘type’ of product you are selling. In this instance, choose one main colour, you can always introduce other secondary colours too – or different shades or tones.

Purple - Green - Red - Blue

Graphic: if a graphic is used on the packaging of a product, it is designed to appeal to the subliminal senses. The graphic you choose must be eye-catching and also give out subliminal information about the product. Below are 4 examples of graphics that could be used. Look at these and then use them to help you decide on a suitable graphic for your product. Ask yourself the following questions:

  • What does the graphic say about the product?
  • What image is it giving out?
