Foundation

The aim of the foundation is to cover up and blend-in skin imperfections; packaging can promise 'long-lasting cover', or a 'satin finish to your skin'. All these 'effects' are visible factors. With increased scientific knowledge, the addition of a sun protection factor (SPF) is now seen as beneficial

Skin imperfections can vary widely ranging from small freckles to high skin pigmentation - red cheeks or birth marks. Foundation is designed to even out the smaller imperfections such as rosy cheeks or blotchy skin tone caused by uneven skin pigmentation. Specialist foundations are used to cover larger skin imperfections, such as a vascular birthmark (often referred to as a strawberry mark or port-wine stain).

Although an SPF may be present in foundations, the main aim of the foundation is not to protect against the sun, but to even out the skin tone and to enhance the skin's texture. Sun protection products should be used as part of a responsible approach to suncare.
