Children’s Activity Zone

Solids, Liquids and Gases
Science 3
1e - to recognise differences between solids, liquids and gases in terms of ease of flow and maintenance of shape and volume.
Earth and Space: materials from Earth, level C - describe the difference between solids, liquids and gases.
Virtual Experiment
Science 3
2b - to describe changes that occur when materials are heated and cooled
2d - about reversible changes eg: melting and freezing
Earth and Space: changing materials, level B - describe how everyday materials can be changed by heating and cooling
Earth and Space: changing materials, level C - describe in simple terms the changes that occur when water is heated or cooled

ICT
To use simulation software to answer ’What if..?’ questions.
Controlling and modelling, level C - use more complex simulation/adventure games requiring a higher level of decision making
Aerosols
Science 3
2d - about reversible changes including evaporation
2f - non reversible changes result in the formation of new materials that may be useful
Earth and Space: changing materials, level C - describe in simple terms the changes that occur when water is heated or cooled
Earth and Space: changing materials, level C - describe changes when materials are mixed

Teachers' Zone

Changes to materials
Science 3
2d/f - about reversible and non-reversible changes
2g - that burning materials results in the formation of new materials and that this change is not usually reversible.
Earth and Space: changing materials, level C - describe in simple terms the changes that occur when water is heated or cooled
Earth and Space: changing materials, level C - describe changes when materials are mixed
Earth and Space: changing materials, level B - describe how everyday materials can be changed by heating or cooling

ICT
Using the internet for research
Searching and researching, level D - use a search engine

Soap-making
Science 3
2a - to describe the changes that occur when materials are mixed
2b - to describe the changes that occur when materials are heated and cooled
Earth and Space: changing materials, level C - describe changes when materials are mixed
Earth and Space: changing materials, level B - describe how everyday materials can be changed by heating or cooling

ICT
Using the internet for research
Searching and researching, level D - use a search engine
Data Handling
Science 3
1e - to recognise differences between solids, liquids and gases
Earth and Space: materials from Earth, level C - describe the difference between solids, liquids and gases

ICT
Develop ideas by bringing together and organising information, eg: use a data handling package to create graphs and charts.
Collecting and analysing, level E - analyse problems, implement and evaluate solutions using database and spreadsheet

Investigate! - mixing materials with water

Extension Ideas

Use the background information in the Information/Resources Zone to research how different materials behave when they have changes imposed on them. Look at the difference between reversible and non-reversible changes. Investigate whether liquids and solids behave in similar ways when changes are imposed.

Do a project on soap, using the background information provided in the Information/Resources Zone.
Follow the life of a bar of soap from its raw ingredients, through its mixing and making process, testing and packaging to getting onto the shelf in the shop. Collect samples of different soaps and their packaging for display. Make flow diagrams to show the journey from start to finish. Use information books to find out about the plants used in a soap, how the product gets from the factory to the shops and how it is marketed. Make up a new soap, design the packaging and give it a name.

Use the data handling Classification Software Package link provided in the Information/Resources Zone to create a database from the solids, liquids, gases activity in the Children’s Zone. Fill in fields for different products, those from the activity and those collected by the children at home. Fields could include:
Name of product
What it is used for
Category - facial cosmetic, skincare, toiletry or perfumery
Behaviour
Using information from the Children’s Zone solids, liquids or gases, create graphs and charts from the completed Classification Software Package database.

We would also like to draw your attention to the FACE VALUE resource, accessible from the home page of the CATIE website. This material is designed primarily for KS4 students and their teachers but there may be information within the sections on skin, teeth and hair which could be of interest to students at KS2.
