Which category of plant?
Science 2
4b - how locally occurring plants can be identified and assigned to groups
4c - that the variety of plants and animals makes it important to identify them and assign them to groups
Living things and the processes of life: interaction of living things with their environment, level A - recognise and name some common plants and animals found in the local environment
Living things and the processes of life: variety and characteristic features, level D - give the main distinguishing features of the major groups of flowering and non-flowering plants
Plants in their habitat
Science 2
5b - about the different plants found in different habitats
5c - how plants in different habitats are suited to their environment
Living things and the processes of life: interaction of living things with their environment, level D - give examples of how plants and animals are suited to their environment
Water transportation
Science 2
3a - the effect of light, air, water and temperature on plant growth
3b - the role of the leaf in producing new material for growth
3c- that the root anchors the plant, and that water and minerals are taken in through the root and transported through the stem to other parts of the plant
Living things and the processes of life: the processes of life, level B - recognise stages in the life-cycles of familiar plants and animals
Living things and the processes of life: the processes of life, level C - describe the broad functions of the main parts of flowering plants
Living things and the processes of life: the processes of life, level E - identify the raw materials, conditions and products of photosynthesis

Extension Ideas

Plants In Design
Use the information provided in the Information/Resources Zone to do some research into plants used in cosmetic and toiletry products. Research on the internet and in magazines what particular products look like, how they are packaged and how the plant extract is used to market the product.
Get the children to choose a plant extract and make up a new product to contain it. Set them a project to follow through the process of design; the packaging, name, market, advertising campaign etc

Plants in Place
Use the information provided in the Information/Resources Zone to collect data on plants; what group they belong to, their characteristics and their habitats.
Use the Classification Software Package provided to collate and sort the information the children have collected.
Fields could include:
Name of plant
Group
Description
Characteristics
You could produce a class book about plants and their habitats.

We would also like to draw your attention to the FACE VALUE resource, accessible from the home page of the CATIE website. This material is designed primarily for KS4 students and their teachers but there may be information within the sections on skin, teeth and hair which could be of interest to students at KS2.
