Reflection
Science 4
3a - understand that light travels from a source
3c - know that light is reflected from shiny surfaces
3d - know that we see things when light enters our eye
Energy and Forces: properties and uses of energy, level C - link light to shadow formation
Energy and Forces: properties and uses of energy, level C - give examples of light being reflected from surfaces
Energy and Forces: properties and uses of energy, level B - link light and sound to seeing and hearing

Evaporation
Science 3
1e - to recognise the differences between solids, liquids and gases in terms of ease of flow
2d - know about reversible changes eg. evaporation
Earth and Space: materials from Earth, level C - describe the difference between solids, liquids and gases.
Earth and Space: changing materials, level C - describe in simple terms the changes that occur when water is heated or cooled

Pitch
Science 4
3e - sounds are made when objects vibrate
3f - how to change the pitch of sounds
3g - that vibrations from sound sources require a medium, eg: air, through which to travel to the ear
Energy and Forces: properties and uses of energy, level C - link sound to sources of vibration
Energy and Forces: properties and uses of energy, level D - use the terms 'pitch' and 'volume' to describe sound
Energy and Forces: properties and uses of energy, level E - explain what happens when sound passes through different materials

Fragrances in household products
Science 3
2d - know about reversible changes eg. evaporation

ICT
Using the internet for research
To handle and present information in interesting ways
Searching and researching, level D - use a search engine. Creating and presenting, level C - create and edit a document with text and graphics; create a multimedia presentation
Touch and Taste
Science 4
3d - that we see things when light enters our eye
3g - that vibrations form sound sources requiring a medium through which to travel to the ear
Energy and Forces: properties and uses of energy, level B - link light and sound to seeing and hearing
Energy and Forces: properties and uses of energy, level C - link sound to sources of vibration
Energy and Forces: properties and uses of energy, level E - explain what happens when sound passes through different materials

Searching and researching, level D - use a search engine Creating and presenting, level C - create and edit a document with text and graphics; create a multimedia presentation
Data Handling
ICT
Collect, store and analyse information, eg: collect information and fill in a database
Collecting and analysing, level D - use database reports including searching and sorting
Water Cycle
Science 3
2e - to know the part played by evaporation and condensation in the water cycle. Click here for downloadable diagram of the water cycle.
Earth and Space: changing materials, level C - describe in simple terms the changes that occur when water is heated or cooled

Extension Ideas

Use the background information in the Information/Resources Zone to research different fragrances in household products and how they are made. Find out which smells are most frequent and whether specific fragrances are used for specific jobs. Do a survey, taking a selection of the most common fragrances, to find out which is the most popular.
Bring in a selection of products from home with different fragrances. Think of suitable words to describe each one. Get the children to imagine they are writing an advert for one fragrance. How will they sell the smell?

Carry out research on the remaining senses, touch and taste. Use information books and the internet to find out as much as you can about the senses. Take the information the children have already got from the activities in the Children’s Zone.
Use the multimedia Design Software Package link provided in the Information/Resources Zone to create a presentation of the information gathered.

Use the data handling Classification Software Package link provided in the Information/Resources Zone to create a database about different fragrances and their uses.
Fill in fields for different fragrances, they could include:

Name of fragrance

Common use

Name of product using fragrance

Recognition - in a survey how many people knew the smell

Popularity - in a survey how many people liked the smell

Key word - which best describes the smell

Use the downloadable diagrams of the water cycle provided in the Information/Resources Zone to show the children how the process of evaporation fits into the water cycle.

We would also like to draw your attention to the FACE VALUE resource, accessible from the home page of the CATIE website. This material is designed primarily for KS4 students and their teachers but there may be information within the sections on skin, teeth and hair which could be of interest to students at KS2.
